CROME Project Ends Successfully
After 7 years of hard work
Among the deliverables, we can cite two major achievements. The full in-house development of a brand-new system for ionizing radiation monitoring intended for radiation protection and safety. The production of 500 equipment and the full replacement of ARCON
200 CROME Devices Currently in Operation
CROME is already deployed in the PS Booster, PS, n-TOF, SPS, SM18, HL-LHC UPRs and the North Area, integrating more than 500 RP equipement. A new project is about to start to replace RAMSES, with a further 1500 devices integrated by 2028 in time for the HL-LHC.

Safety and Environmental Monitoring
Monitoring ionising radiation and other emissions generated by CERN’s activities is a regulatory requirement for CERN. The HSE unit operates an impressive monitoring system aimed at ensuring that radiation levels and various emissions remain well within legal limits. The operation, maintenance and upgrade of the system are a continuous challenge.
Safety Critical Systems
CROME reliability is ensured by three pillars: the development process to reduce systematic failures, a thorough dependability study according to the IEC 61508 standard including functional verification to reduce random failures, and a continuous monitoring of the correct behaviour of the system during its operation.

1st Pulsed Radiation Measurement Workshop
Welcome to the first CERN organized workshop in the field of pulsed ionizing radiation monitoring for both radiation protection and environmental monitoring. This workshop is intended to provide a forum to a specific community throughout the research community to present their latest research findings, ideas, and applications in the areas of ionizing radiation monitoring.
Quick Tour
With the full success of CROME Project at CERN and successful deployment of this new system all over CERN, we would like to invite all our partners to a dedicated workshop focused on three topics :
- Pulsed Mixed field radiation monitoring for high energy accelerators through the tangible example of CROME System. For this topic, we will have a series of presentations given by CROME Development Team.
- Latest research in the field of REMS for particle physics and research facilities
- Training sessions for CROME system users
The Audience
This workshop has been established specifically for those who provide an instrumentation service to their respective radiation protection and safety teams within their organisations.
The Agenda
From the 5th to the 6th of December with an optional user training session on the 7th of December.
